WHAT IT MEANS TO ME TO BE A FEMALE FOOTBALL FAN

I’m a 27 year old female with a love for football. My favourite Team is Chelsea and my all time favourite player is Frank Lampard - for many reasons - I think his skill is awesome, the power he can get behind a free kick or strike on goal astounds me and I think he generally an all round great player.
Now its not all plain sailing, it’s a weekly challenge to gain credibility in my circle of friends as a female football fan and surprise surprise most of my friends are male. I never shy away from a bit of footie banter but my ‘new-age-fan’ opinions don’t always go down to well.
The way I see it is this: I was never into football as a child, nor through my teens or early 20’s. Nor did I have an older male influence in my life so I never had football around me. However I do remember having the Gazza Calendar during the 1998 World Cup - now that was deep! Anyway, so I’ve been with my partner for nearly 10 years and in 2002 I decided I’d had enough of going down the pub with my mates and sitting their with nothing constructive to say about football - which lets face it is one of men’s favourite topics.
So, I started watching the 2002 world cup and funnily enough started to quite like it. I managed to watch most games as we had a large screen set up at work for client events, and I watched the early ones before starting work. By the final of the World Cup, I was hooked and started to watch premiership games down the pub. Now as I had only just started with the world of all things football, I would consider myself to be a new-age-fan with no real allegiance to any particular team, so I started to follow the teams that I found exciting to watch. In my opinion, back then Man Utd were exciting, Chelsea started to come into the radar and I didn’t like Aresenal because Patrick Viera was a ‘cheating, arrogant wotsit’ in my opinion.
But times changed. Beckham left Man U and the team dynamics and personality changed and I didn’t like what they were becoming with foul mouth’s (back then) like Rooney and Ronaldo and so I took less interest in the team. Oh and I always had faith in Diego Forlan but he was struggling to get a place in the team and was subsequently shipped off to Vila Real, at where he really shone in his first season their I might add!
Anyway, during all this, I was drawn to Chelsea and started to feel a lot of emotions during their highs and lows, new exciting players started to emerge and I started getting defensive when Arsenal fans and other friends of mine slated them - this was it - Chelsea were MY TEAM.
Now I was shocked and quite disappointed when Claudio Ranieri was side-stepped the way he was, and after getting Chelsea to Number 2 in the league and the final stages of the Champions League, but what was to come was to be even more exciting - announcing the new manager - Jose Mourinho! He has brought fresh excitement, controversy, team camaraderie and winning ideas to the Premiership. I really hope he sees out his long contract with Chelsea.
So my favourite Chelsea players are of course Frank, Drogba has had an awesome season, I’ve always rated Joe Cole and am so pleased he scored for England recently on his injury comeback, Cech is out of this world - RoboCech, Kalou and Mikel are starting to come into their own, and I do feel for Shevchenko who has struggled in his first season at Chelsea but then don’t most players?!
Anyway, so this is my take on being a female football fan and I really don’t care what most blokes say, I can like whatever team and players I like and for whatever reason - each to their own. And I may live in Bewdley and not on Chelsea’s doorstep, but if clubs were only allowed to have fans from their own suburbs, the world would be a very boring place!
Oh, one final thing, I can honestly say I watch football for the excitement and skills of the players and the thrill of the game, but Girls, you can’t deny there are some Hotties on the pitch! So i’ve devoted some of my website to ‘checking them out’ for you!
COME ON YOU BLUES!
